 Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 - 1806) was a preeminent artist of Japanese woodblock  prints and painting, mostly know for his works in the genre of beauty or 'bijin'.  His love for and enchantment with women is evident in the depiction of beautiful women, showcased in our collection below.  He achieved fame in his lifetime throughout Japan, and his influence also reached the West, where he was an inspiration to the likes of Degas, Manet, and Monet.
