In New Year's Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree (1857), a departure from his usual depictions of everyday life and landscapes, Hiroshige invites us deeper into the realms of his imagination as he breathes artistic life in to the old Shinto belief that on New Year’s eve, foxes or kitsune – the messengers of the God of rice and agriculture, Inari - would gather beneath this enoki tree (hackberry tree), and changing into formal dress, proceed to the nearby Oji Inari Shrine to pay their respects. Hiroshige masterfully illustrates this mythical scene in woodblock print, of white foxes emitting flames as they journey on to the Shrine, drawing from the belief that these foxfires would signal to local farmers the crop yield of the coming year.
